Fishburne Military School, Waynesboro, VA — Fishburne Military School’s BSA Troop 1879 welcomed their latest Eagle Scout last evening as Cadet Austin Haug (Senior; Culpeper, VA) completed his final interview with Valley District Scout Leaders.

Haug, a three-year Cadet, was both “relieved and proud” to have reached this milestone in his Scouting career and credits the lessons learned through Scouting for much of his success at FMS.

“Scouting gave me my first leadership opportunities and taught me to be comfortable speaking to and teaching groups of individuals,” he explained.

When asked what the most important facet of his leadership education has been, Haug replied “the importance of persistence. If you can’t persist in your pursuit of a goal, then you end up with nothing.”

Persistence in his pursuit of attaining Eagle played a role, in fact, in Haug’s decision to come to Fishburne Military School. “When we were looking at schools, it was important to me that I could continue with Scouting. We saw Fishburne had an active Scout Troop and that really helped us choose to come here.”

Now, preserving and strengthening FMS’ Troop 1879 has emerged as a goal for Haug in his Senior year. “We have a lot of younger cadets here and I’d like to encourage them to join the Troop. It’s unfortunate when a Cadet comes to Scouting too late in his career and just doesn’t have enough time to see it through to becoming an Eagle. I want to help younger guys get involved early so that they can reach this level too.”

As far as future plans, Haug hopes to attend the Virginia Military Institute for college and pursue a commission in the US Army while studying Computer Science and CyberSecurity.
